Deviation from the definition: Data relates to patients hospitalized in psychiatric institutes and
discharged during the given year.
Only in-patients are included. NOTE: The capital region (Copenhagen) and the region of Sjaelland all
have changed hospital codes in 2008 and in this context all mental patients were discharged (or so
it appears from the data). Therefore, the figures are probably only for the rest of the country
which explains why the value is lower than the previous year.

Deviation from the definition: Data contains the number of patients with mental disorders (ICD-10:
F00-F99) discharged from hospital after a length of stay of 365 days or more. It is not possible to
specify discharge data into discharge data of mental health hospitals and discharge data of general
Break in time series: Up to and including the reporting year 2002, data only include discharges in
general hospitals and mental health hospitals. From reporting year 2003, data include additionally
discharges in preventive and rehabilitative hospitals, however discharges from these institutions
with less than 100 beds are not included. The years before 2003 are therefore not comparable to the
following years. Data before reporting year 2000 is not available.
Mental Health Commission. Data comes from the national census of Irish psychiatric units and
hospitals. All patients resident in units and hospitals operating within the provisions of the
Mental Health Act 2001 were enumerated in the census. Since 2007, this census is carried out every 3
years. In recent years, the Census has been carried out on 31st March.

Reporting of these data have deteriorated during recent years, which explains the loss of data after
2010. As from 2014 data will be reported into the national patient register on a monthly basis,
which will improve the possibilities to produce accurate numbers.
Statistics of Hospitals; yearly census.
Coverage: Full coverage of hospitals; sufficient (nearly full) coverage of inpatient and day cases
since 2002. Due to a modification of the legislation, day cases are not collected in 2009 anymore.
Estimation method: Discharges without a valid ICD-code are not accounted for (negligible).
Break in time series: The gradual change of diagnosis classification since 2008 from ICD-10 WHO to
ICD-10 GM (German Modification) may lead to breaks for some categories.

approximate figure for 2013.

from ISD's Acute (SMR01) and psychiatric (SMR04) inpatient databases combined. This measure is
calculated as the number of patients with a stay of >365 and is shown under the year of discharge.

combined. This measure is calculated as the number of patients with a stay of >365 and is shown
under the year of discharge. Years 2011-2013 have been updated as the data completeness on the
SMR04 database has improved for these years. Previously the 2010 value was used for these years.
