Indicator notes
Disability-adjusted life expectancy (world health report)
Indicator code: E040501.T

Disability-adjusted life expectancy (DALE) (presently also called Healthy life expectancy) estimates that were made by WHO Headquarters for the World Health Report (WHR). Calculated using the Sullivan method based on age-specific information on the prevalence of non-fatal health outcomes. National DALE estimates are based on the life tables for each Member State (see the definition of indicator 060501 for methodological details), population representative sample surveys assessing physical and cognitive disability and general health status, and detailed information on the epidemiology of major disabling conditions in each country. See the WHR-2000 for further methodological details.

Data for 1999 are as published in WHR-2000.

Later data are taken from World Health Reports or World Health Statistics.

Data for different years is not necessarily comparable and should not be used to analyse trends over time, due to improvements in survey methodology and the use of new epidemiological data for some diseases.
