The WHO Europe Child and Adolescent Health Database (CAHD) provides a set of statistics based on indicators related to the health and well-being of children and adolescents. The statistics were collated from a variety of databases as a joint effort between WHO program divisions and collaborating centres and partners. The database was constructed for the purpose of supporting the Child and Adolescent Health and Development Strategy (2015), providing the relevant information for monitoring progress on child and adolescent health indicators in the 53 member states of the WHO European Region.

The WHO European Childhood Obesity Surveillance Initiative (COSI) was set up as a response to the European Ministerial Conference on Counteracting Obesity. Member States recognized the need for harmonized surveillance systems, providing measured and comparable data on rates of overweight/obesity among primary-school children. Such data is essential to inform policy development within the European Region, indicate trends and provide an insight into the impact of action taken. COSI was a response to this need. The importance of, and political commitment to, such surveillance mechanisms has been reinforced in the Vienna Declaration on Nutrition and Noncommunicable Diseases in the Context of Health 2020 and the European Food and Nutrition Action Plan 2015-2020.
Data collected from Childhood Obesity Surveillance Data. Prevalence estimates are based on the 2007 WHO recommended growth reference for school-age children and adolescents (de Onis M, Onyango AW, Borghi E, Siyam A, Nishida C, Siekmann J. Development of a WHO growth reference for school-aged children and adolescents. Bulletin of the World Health Organization 2007; 85(9): 660-667). Round 2 (2007/2008) and Round 3 (2009/2010) survey results are presented from COSI. Children with a BMI/A Z-score < -5 or > +5 are excluded.
